Dorothy Ann Neish, age 92, passed away on August 5th 2015 in Halifax. She was born on November 25, 1922 in Montreal, Quebec as the only child of Arthur Gordon and Dorothy (Slack) Ray. Dorothy grew up and was educated in Montreal (Westmount), Quebec. She met Arthur Charles Neish from Nova Scotia when they were both studying at McGill University and they were married on June 10, 1944. She subsequently lived in Ottawa, Ontario, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Davis, California, and Halifax, Sandy Cove and Karsdale, Nova Scotia as her husband pursued his scientific career with the National Research Council of Canada until his untimely death on September 7, 1973. After her husband’s death Dorothy relocated from Karsdale to Halifax and spent the remainder of her life there. She was a devoted homemaker and daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, traveling while she was able to visit and help out family in various places in North America and the Philippines. Dorothy was also an active volunteer helping out at “Wee Care” (a facility for children with medical conditions) and then for many years at the IWK Hospital for Children which presented her with an award of merit from on April 23, 1990 “in recognition of exceptional commitment and exemplary service as a volunteer.” She enjoyed curling, golf, and playing bridge at various times in her life and was an outstanding knitter and smocker who delighted in giving her creations to members of her family. She was an avid reader, enjoyed her friends and family, gardening, keeping up with current affairs, and taking care of the various pets she had throughout the years. She will be greatly missed by her four children, Iain Charles, Gordon Arthur (Laure), Nancy Ray, and Douglas Andrew; ten grandchildren Chantal (Tom) Haske, Arthur Neish, Joëlle (Ryan Ortiz) Neish, James Neish, Ruth Anne (Rey) Neish Joaquino, Emily (Natalia) Neish, Catherine (Shawn) Neish Nock, Michael Prowse, Kate Prowse and Elizabeth Neish, and eight great-grandchildren. Our sincere thanks go out to the staff at Evan Hall and Drummond Hall for their excellent care during her last days. Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 10th 2015 at 2:00 PM at Christ church Anglican in Karsdale, Nova Scotia, with Canon Ken Vaughan officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Dorothy’s name to the IWK Health Centre, Halifax, NS. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date to be determined.
